The Adirondack Council is taking part in the 2015 International Acid Rain Conference being held this week in Rochester. This once-every-five-years event, that has never been held in New York before, is looking at ways to better protect sensitive areas like the Adirondack Park from acid rain.
In September, staff of the Adirondack Council met with with an international coalition of 10 conservationists from all corners of the globe to discuss the unique nature of the Adirondack Park and how it is a model for the protection of lived-in natural areas around the world.
Congressman Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook, has proposed a resolution calling on the House of Representatives to address and solve the air pollution issues that cause climate change.
The globally unique Adirondack Park is poised for change. That change could be very good or very bad. Much will depend on political leadership from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, according to the Adirondack Council's State of the Park report for 2015.

The long battle against acid rain in the Adirondack Park reached a major milestone in August, as the owners of New York's two largest coal-fired power plants said they would shut down their operations or convert them to cleaner fuels.
Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it had set tough new standards for controlling greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fuel power plants. This good news for the Adirondack Park, as we could stand to lose much of our biodiversity if the Park becomes to warm. In fact, scientists predict the Park's annual temperatures could match those of Richmond, Va.
On July 18 at its annual meeting at Heaven Hill Farm in Lake Placid, the Adirondack Council's Board of Directors elected Bob Kafin to serve a two-year term as its chairman. We are thrilled to have him as our new chairman. Bob is a highly respected environmental attorney who began his career in the Adirondacks, and is recognized nationwide for his legal skills and expertise.
This past Saturday on July 18, nearly 300 people gathered at Heaven Hill Farm in Lake Placid to honor the Adirondack Council's former Board Chairs as Conservationists of the Year and to celebrate 40 years of effective advocacy for the Adirondack Park.
The Adirondack Council will celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Saturday, July 18, by honoring all 11 chairs of its board of directors, naming each as Conservationist of the Year at Heaven Hill Farm.
