ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. – The Adirondack Council has announced that it supports amending New York’s Constitution to guarantee all New Yorkers the right to clean water, clean air, and a healthful environment.
A resolution to accomplish that task was passed by both houses of the Legislature, which is now Ballot Proposal Two is on the November 2 ballot.
“Clean water, clean air, and a healthful environmental are basic human needs,” said Adirondack Council Executive Director William C. Janeway. “They should be basic human rights that are guaranteed by our government. But even in the Adirondacks, where the constitution already protects public lands and waters as “forever wild,” there is no guarantee that public health and public welfare are top priorities for state government. The Adirondack Council supports amending the Constitution to guarantee those rights to all New Yorkers.”
Established in 1975, the Adirondack Council is a privately funded not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the ecological integrity and wild character of the Adirondack Park. It is the largest environmental organization whose sole focus is the Adirondacks.
The Council carries out its mission through research, education, advocacy. and legal action. It envisions a Park with clean water and clean air, core wilderness areas, farms and working forests, and vibrant, diverse, welcoming, safe communities. Adirondack Council advocates live in all 50 United States.
