Adirondack Council Executive Director William C. Janeway said:
“We congratulate Assemblyman Carl Heastie on his election as Speaker of the Assembly and look forward to working with him and his team to advance environmental protection and community development.
“Speaker Heastie has been a strong supporter of the Environmental Protection Fund and has worked to increase its revenue. He supported the Sewage Spill Right to Know law that requires rapid public notice when a municipal septic waste spill threatens public health. This is obviously important in big cities, but also in Adirondack towns that rely on clean water to support tourism. He also supported the health-impact assessment of hydraulic fracturing (hydro-fracking) to extract gas from shale that led the governor to ban the practice in New York.
“Heastie earned a 97 percent from Environmental Advocates of New York in their Voters’ Guide for his voting record in 2013. He earned a perfect 100 in 2014.
“Other issues where Heatie’s support bodes well for the Adirondack Park include universal pre-K; increased education funding; summer youth employment programs; after-school child care; Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) and the Home Energy Assistance Program.
“The New York State Assembly has long been a leading champion of clean water, public health, environmental protection and preservation of the wilderness and communities of the Adirondacks. We look forward to working with the Assembly and its new leader to build on this legacy.”
