Adirondack Council Statement on the APA's Plan to Consider Amendments to the State Land Master Plan

October 9, 2014

The Adirondack Park Agency today announced its plan to follow through on commitments made last December when the Hudson Gorge and Essex Chain of lakes were classified as Wilderness and Primitive (motor free). The agency said it would now move ahead to amend the State Land Master Plan to protect these lands and provide access where agreed.

Here is the Adirondack Council's statement on this plan:

“We appreciate that the Adirondack Park Agency has announced a commitment and schedule for protecting as wilderness and motor free the Hudson Gorge and Essex Chain of Lakes as an integral component of a plan that provides for access and important local community and sportsmen and women priorities” said Adirondack Council Executive Director William C. Janeway. “The Adirondack Council looks forward to continued participation in this process. We will respect all stakeholders’ perspectives, defend the ecological integrity and wild character of the “forever wild” Forest Preserve and seek to ensure that the Park and its communities benefit for generations to come."
