Adirondack Council Applauds DEC Recreation Plan for Sacandaga Block Conservation Easement
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Adirondack Council today applauded the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation for approving a Sacandaga Block Conservation Easement recreational management plan that will provide public access to 6,000 acres of commercial timberland in the southern Adirondack Park.
“Our hats are off to Commissioner Basil Seggos and Regional Director Bob Stegemann for this plan to improve public recreational access, while still protecting water quality, forest health and wildlife,” said Adirondack Council Executive Director William C. Janeway. “DEC has opened thousands of acres for hiking, biking, hunting and fishing, while also protecting the environment by restricting the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) by the public.
“The announcement highlights the importance of the state’s land-use decisions being guided by state-of-the-art regional planning, a careful assessment of the landscape, and a reliance on guidance from science and the law,” he said. “That should be the model for land management plans throughout the Adirondacks.”
The Sacandaga Block is part of the Upper Hudson Woodlands Conservation Easement, located in Fulton and Saratoga Counties, surrounding the Great Sacandaga Lake, in the towns of Bleecker, Mayfield, Edinburg and Greenfield. Public access is available via Tolmantown Road, Tannery Road, Dennie Road, Hohler Road, County Rte. 125, Horse Hill Road and Lake Desolation Road. A separate Recreation Management Plan addressing hunting, boating and fishing on all of the Upper Hudson Woodlands conservation easement lands was adopted in 2014.
The Adirondack Council is a privately funded not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the ecological integrity and wild character of the Adirondack Park. The Council envisions a Park comprised of core wilderness areas, surrounded by farms and working forests, as well as vibrant, local communities.
