ADIRONDACK COUNCIL'S
STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR DAVID PATERSON
New Governor Inaugurated
March 17
Following the resignation of
Gov. Eliot Spitzer March 17, Lt. Gov. David Paterson, D- Manhattan,
was sworn in as Governor of New York.
Governor Paterson is the fifth New York chief executive with
whom the Adirondack Council will have the opportunity to establish
a solid working relationship. Since the organization was founded
in 1975, the Adirondack Council has been a trusted advisor on
Adirondack and environmental matters to Governors Hugh Carey,
Mario Cuomo, George Pataki and the brief Spitzer administration.
The Adirondack Council is a non-partisan organization that strives
to make environmental progress with all elected and appointed
political leaders, regardless of their political party or prior
performance. The Council neither solicits nor accepts donations
from public funds or any taxpayer-supported sources. This financial
independence allows the organization to speak honestly and forcefully
when environmental policy is made.
Council staff members have worked on several occasions with Governor
Paterson in his previous role as a state senator. Our most recent
collaboration was a press conference in which we halted a plan
to alter the role and oversight of the NYS Energy Research and
Development Authority. NYSERDA is in charge of nearly all of
the state's renewable energy programs and energy-conservation
grants. It also oversees vital acid rain research on Adirondack
waters. Governor Paterson had a strong environmental voting
record as a Senator and continued to advocate adequate environmental
spending as Lieutenant Governor.
The Adirondack Council looks forward to working with Governor
Paterson's new administration to ensure the ecological health
and wild character of the Adirondack Park are protected today
and for generations to come.
