The Adirondack Council's Forever
Wild Day will take place on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Hohmeyer's Lake Clear
Lodge, 6319 State Route 30, Lake Clear, NY. The Lodge
is located in southern Franklin County about 8 miles northwest
of Saranac Lake.
We hope you will join us for
the 100-Mile Forever Wild Day Lunch to celebrate local
products, growers and farmers. At lunch we will honor Adirondack
Harvest as the Conservationist of the Year and recognize their
work protecting farmland and connecting growers to local markets
in all 13 counties containing at least some land within the Adirondack
|
 |
Park. The lunch menu will
be developed by Chef Cathy Hohmeyer using farm fresh foods and
local products found within a 100-mile area of the Lodge.
Special guest Aaron Woolf (Director and Producer of the award-winning
film King Corn)
will speak about sustainable agriculture and rural infrastructure
to support local economies.
Adirondack Harvest is being honored for their efforts to support
endangered family farms, strengthen
 |
the
local economy, and protect the environment. You'll enjoy the
exceptional taste and freshness of local products; learn about
the benefits of buying local products; and understand how this
action positively impacts your health, the local economy, and
your carbon footprint. Did you know the average mouthful of
food in the US has traveled 1300 miles before it is finally eaten?
-Tuft's University. |
After lunch you can attend the
members' meeting where you'll learn about the Council's
accomplishments, current challenges and plans for the future.
You can also participate in outings being planned to explore
the Park's natural environment and a culinary workshop
hosted by chef/owner Cathy Hohmeyer.
| Hohmeyer's
Lake Clear Lodge is an original Adirondack estate sited on 25
acres. The Lodge was built circa 1866 as a trading post and post
office by Cathy Hohmeyer's great aunt and uncle. The Lodge later
expanded to an inn and Adirondack hotel and served as a stage
coach stop before and after the completion of the railroad (now
abandoned). Accommodations include Adirondack B&B rooms in
the Lodge and eco-friendly Adirondack cabins on the property. |
 |
Lake Clear is a unique body
of water as it is the dividing line between those waters that
run north and those that run east and south. The rivers running
to the north go to the St. Lawrence River and the
 |
waters
running east and south flow to Lake Champlain. It is 65 ft. at
its deepest point and is approximately 1.5 to 2 miles in circumference.
It offers excellent recreational opportunities; including fishing
(the famous lure "the Lake Clear Wobbler" is named
for it).
From the Hohmeyer's beach on Lake Clear you can access the St.
Regis Canoe Area, the only designated canoe area in New York
State. It is the headwaters of three rivers; the Middle and West
Branch of the St. Regis River, and the Saranac River. The area
is noted |
for its qualities of clear
spring-fed ponds, short canoe carries and tranquil beauty in
an essentially wilderness setting. It covers 18,400 acres, includes
St. Regis Mountain, St. Regis and Long Ponds, sections of the
east and west branches of the St. Regis River, and 56 other water
bodies. This area is part of a network of recreational waterways
closed to motor vehicles, motor boats and aircraft that attract
canoeists and kayakers from across the country.
